About Us

The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine (FoLSM) at King’s College London is one of the largest and most successful centres for biomedical research and education in the UK. The Faculty has internationally leading expertise in basic, translational and clinical research, which is deployed to inform and deliver our education programmes, enhance clinical innovation and serve our communities. King’s was ranked 10th in the world for Clinical, Pre-Clinical & Health in the Times Higher Rankings for 2023.

We are located at four central London campuses - Guy’s, St Thomas’, Waterloo and Denmark Hill, reflecting the Faculty’s close alignment to our NHS partners. Assisted by our close collaboration with clinical colleagues in the King’s Health Partner (KHP) Trusts and outstanding infrastructure, research is strategically aligned to KHP, where academics and clinicians ensure faster translation and adoption of the Faculty’s research findings into impact directly on the clinical setting and on health outcomes for patients. The Faculty delivers a comprehensive education and training portfolio, including undergraduate training in Medicine and Pharmacy and related BScs and an expansive postgraduate taught portfolio. It also has a comprehensive programme of initiatives to support an inclusive environment and culture, and promote diversity across our staff and student communities, as well as the leadership of the Faculty.

King’s is one of the top UK universities, ranked 36th in the world (Times Higher Education World Rankings 2025) and the fourth oldest university in England, based in the heart of London. King’s has over 33,000 students from over 150 countries, and over 8,500 employees. Details about the Lectureship scheme

Funding for the post has been made available by the University of London, using the income from a Fund established following the sale of the South London Hospital for Women. The Hospital was founded in 1912 to meet the growing demand of women for medical treatment by members of their own sex; to provide, in addition to ordinary hospital beds, wards for women of limited means; and to give further scope for the postgraduate training of medical women.  It closed in 1985 and a substantial portion of the sale proceeds passed to the University of London. The Lectureships are named after Miss Maud Mary Chadburn who was a medical student and graduate of the University, and Founder of the Hospital where she was its Senior Surgeon until 1933.

About the role

The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine seeks to appoint to the post of the Chadburn Clinical Lecturer. This is a fixed term, part time  appointment (maximum 0.8 FTE inclusive of all clinical and academic time); there are up to four positions available.

The lectureship is open to doctors in training  who are at least at ST3 level and have completed their doctoral training (PhD or MDRes) whose personal circumstances make it difficult for them to work full-time. This post gives such individuals an opportunity to develop their academic interests and independence alongside completion of their specialty training.

As a Chadburn Clinical Lecturer, your clinical work will be undertaken in one of the King’s Health Partner NHS Foundation Trusts, being adjusted to be appropriate to the post holder’s level of experience and training.

Prior to applying for the lectureship:

  • you are asked to identify a potential academic supervisor at King’s College London who is happy to be your sponsor to develop a plan for the period of the lectureship along with the split of academic and clinical work. If your academic supervisor is not a Head of Department, the support of your application and plans needs to be sought
  • you are encouraged to discuss with your Training Programme Director, proposed supervisor and NHS England Health Education Team (NHSE HET) the opportunity to continue your clinical training and what additional funding might be available from the NHS. The Chadburn Lectureship from King’s College London provides £50,000 per year total funding (inclusive of salary and associated employer’s costs). The amount of time spent in clinical duties may vary according to your personal needs at any given time and will be included in the contract with King’s College London.
  • you are asked to have designed a research project to complete during the period of the lectureship, which may be in your sub-speciality, including educational/pedagogical research if relevant
  • you must have completed a PhD/MD(Res) by the start of the lectureship
  • you must be licensed to practice and have a strong commitment to clinical care
  • you have some experience in educating/supervising others
  • you have published in peer-reviewed journals and applied for research funding

The post gives you, the lecturer, the opportunity to further your postdoctoral research while progressing your clinical training. It represents an opportunity to develop as a clinical academic, contributing to both education and research at King’s College London.

Preference will be given to the candidates whose research interests are a good strategic fit with the Faculty’s and university’s priorities, building on and complementing areas of existing strength.

Appointment details

The post is for up to 0.8 FTE (5-8 PAs) inclusive of clinical work, for up to five years. Where the lecturer completes their specialty training, they are expected to transition from the lectureship. The part time contract will be restricted by the funding available. In particular, the contract hours may be impacted if the post holder attracts flexible pay premia. Final agreement of the contract hours and duration will be subject to negotiation with the Faculty prior to appointment.

Following completion of the lectureship, you may be expected to move to an externally funded competitive fellowship, progress to a Clinical Senior Lecturer position (CCT is required), or return to the NHS pathway.

Application process

1.   Applicants are asked to identify and speak with their potential academic/specialty supervisor in the first instance to discuss their academic fit and research project 2.   Applicants are asked to complete the standard King’s College London application form, attaching:

  • A full curriculum vitae (including a publications list and conference presentation details)
  • A supporting statement, outlining the research project for the period of the fellowship and their plan for the completion of specialty training, providing evidence of meeting each criterion listed in the person specification
  • A letter of support from the academic supervisor at King’s College London
  • A letter from their Training Programme Director confirming the commitment to their specialty training, including details of FTE/PAs and funding commitment for the period of the lectureship
  • Applications will be shortlisted based on the person specification criteria for an interview. The interview will be with academic and clinical representatives relevant to the applicant’s specialty and academic field
