David Aikman was previously  Professor (in Practice) of Finance at King's Business School, joining in April 2020 as the inaugural Director of the Qatar Centre for Global Banking and Finance. He was the co-organiser of the Bank of England Watchers’ conference.

In July 2025 David was appointed as the Director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.

Prior to joining King’s, David spent 17 years working as an economist at the Bank of England – most recently in the role of Technical Head of Division in the Financial Stability where he led the Bank’s work on various macroprudential issues. 

He is the author of various research papers on financial stability and macroprudential policy, and has a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Warwick.
